Message If it is just road grime from years of driving, I like foamy engine brite. It sticks around to dig into the dirt and then it comes right of with just a hose sprayer.
If you have built up greasy gunk you need something that will stick around to penetrate and loosen the buildup. Brake clean will get oil off of parts, but it is too volatile, and you just end up taking off the top layer. Penetrating oil works great but can be rather expensive if you have a lot of cleaning to do. I like mineral spirits or Diesel fuel. Put it in a spray bottle and soak it down. come back in 10-20 min and either spray it again or hose it off. If I am going for REALLY clean, I will use a water based cleaner after, like simple green or purple power.
Ever notice how good WD-40 is at cleaning stuff? yeah, same idea.
